Change in scenery… Big island to Maui!

On Sunday night we welcomed a 19-year-old girl from Florida named Marley to the cabin. I borrowed a car and picked her up from a hostel in downtown Hilo, and then we stopped at a grocery store before going back to the orchard. She’s very outgoing and adventurous, and she was disappointed that we were departing the next day. She stayed on the bunk beds with me, and we hung out as much as we could to help her feel comfortable before we left. We exchanged numbers in case we ever wind up in Florida, or her in Alberta.

Yesterday was a busy day for us. We woke up at our usual time (around 5:30) and got ready for the day. I had my daily tea, journaled and did a few art pieces for our kind hosts as a thank you gift. Kiko borrowed me her oil pastels during our stay, and they were always asking us questions about our homeland. Since they were always so curious about the beautiful country we grew up in, I decided to create a mixed media (mainly oil pastel, some watercolour) set of art that showed what Canada is all about.

Before we got a ride to the airport, Ziggy and Kiko invited us to hang around for a final lychee harvest. We were excited for this, because it’s a peaceful activity and we love the taste of it! Marley came along too, equally as excited to try the lychee and learn about the orchard.

Our flight was scheduled for 1:45pm from the Hilo airport, so at 11 we grabbed our bags and caught a ride from our friend Cara to Hilo. We got through to our gate in about 20 minutes, which is typical there because it’s such a small airport. Then we hopped on our flight to Oahu, where we had a 10 minute window between landing and boarding our connecting flight to Maui. Good thing that airport is also pretty small! We made it with a few minutes to spare, and our flight was even delayed… so our timing was perfect. We arrived in Maui at 4:15pm, and collected our bags quickly before meeting with Jess, a girl we had chatted with beforehand. She took us to the grocery store before we headed down The Road to Hana, where our next stay was. We drove for about 40 minutes through beautiful tropical scenery, then arrived at a cute little property on the north coast. And now we have roommates! We live with Jess, a girl in her late 20s from Idaho, Sarah (who I share a room with) who’s about my age from Ohio, Shaylie who is 21 from St. Paul, and the older maintenance guy who we barely see (I don’t know much about him). Everyone has been really nice and welcoming, and it’s good to make some new friends who want to travel the island with us. Tomorrow we plan to go into town for some activities, so I will keep you posted!!
